Are you thinking about getting a cat for your family? It’s not a bad idea, particularly if you don’t have a lot of spare time. Unlike dogs, cats are quite independent and will do their own thing for most of the day. But at the same time, when they want attention and play, they will expect you to give it to them. With that in mind, here are a few things first-time cat owners should know before they bring this new life into their home.
Kittens Aren’t Independent, Cats Are
Although we just said that cats are independent, there’s an important distinction to make here. When a cat gets older, you will see that it needs you less. As long as you put its food out and milk, your little friend will be happy. Even if you don’t, it will probably get food from one of your next door neighbors. But when your cats a kitten things are different. They’ll follow you around throughout the day. They’ll expect you to allow it to sleep next or near to you. They’ll cry when they’re not getting attention or if they want something. So, don’t expect your kitten to be independant straight away. In the first couple of months, they always need a lot of attention.
Buy A Scratching Post
Dogs have a bad reputation for wrecking a home but cats can be just as destructive. Cats do need to scratch their claws to keep them from getting too long. If you don’t provide a place for them to do this, they’ll find somewhere else in your home. That’s why one of the first purchases for your cat, should be a scratching post. You can attach toys to this as well and that will keep them entertained.
Birds, Rats, And Mice
If your car comes in carrying a rat, mouse or bird, you have to understand this is a gift. They are bringing it to you, and they expect you to be happy. Weird, yet true. The problem with this is that if you praise them, you can expect more gifts in the future. You have to take it off them, scold them and dispose of it. Please also be aware, that cats often do not kill their prey straight away. There’s a good chance they’ll bring it to you while it’s still alive.
Fleas And Collars
One of the easiest ways to stop your cat from getting fleas is to buy them a collar. Or, you can get flea treatment from the vet. This might be covered under your cat insurance policy. But you will have to check this with your own vet. Or, look online at different policies. Fleas are one of the worst problems your cat can bring into your home. They’re a nightmare to get rid of.
Getting A Kitty Door
Lastly, once your cat gets old enough they’ll want to go in and out of the house a lot. They might not come back for hours or even days at a time. This is perfectly natural and is common with cat owners. The easiest way to deal with this is to get a cat door. That way, they can go in and out as they please. But the door can be locked if you want to keep them in. In this way, the independance of cats is both a blessing and a curse.
