Martin National Wildlife Refuge - Ewell, MD. Martin National Wildlife Refuge includes the northern half of Smith Island, which lies 11 miles west of Crisfield, MD, and Watts Island, which is located between the eastern shore of Virginia and Tangier Island. Both islands are situated in the lower Chesapeake Bay. The Refuge was established in 1954 when the late Glenn L. Martin donated 2569 acres to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Erie National Wildlife Refuge - Guys Mills, PA. Erie National Wildlife Refuge is located in Crawford County, 35 miles south of the City of Erie and 10 miles east of Meadville on the outskirts of Guys Mills village. The refuge consists of two separate land units. The Sugar Lake Division, containing 5,206 acres,is the unit closest to Guys Mills. The Seneca Division, containing 3,571 acres, is 10 miles north of the Sugar Lake Division and borders French Creek near Cambridge Springs. The primary objective of the refuge is to provide waterfowl and other migratory birds with nesting, feeding, brooding, and resting habitat...

John Heinz at Tinicum National Wildlife Refuge - Philadelphia, PA. The John Heinz NWR at Tinicum is located in Philadelphia and Delaware Counties, Pennsylvania about 1 mile from Philadelphia International Airport. The refuge was established by an act of Congress in 1972 to protect the largest remaining freshwater tidal marsh in Pennsylvania; approximately 200 acres. When acquisition is complete, it will consist of 1200 acres of varied habitats. Over the years, the refuge has become a resting and feeding area for more than 300 species of birds, 85 of which nest here. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge - Chincoteague, VA. Chincoteague NWR, located primarily on the Virginia side of Assateague Island, consists of more than 14,000 acres of beach, dunes, marsh, and maritime forest. Chincoteague Refuge, originally established in 1943 to provide habitat for migratory birds (with an emphasis on conserving greater snow geese), today provides habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds, and song birds, as well as other species of wildlife and plants. Refuge staff manage this barrier island habitat to allow many species of wildlife to coexist, each establishing their own place in the environment. In fact, more than 320 species of birds are known to occur on the refuge. The refuge has been designated a Globally Important Bird Area, is part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network and designated as one of the top ten birding Hotspots by the National Audubon Society...

Eastern Shore Of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge - Cape Charles, VA. Lying at the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula, the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge serves as one of the country's most valuable stopovers for migratory birds. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay, this 1,127-acre refuge was established in 1984 for migratory birds and endangered species management and for wildlife-dependent recreation including interpretation and education...

Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge - Woodbridge, VA. Featherstone NWR is located about 22 miles south of Washington D.C. at the confluence of Neabsco Creek and the Potomac River. The refuge is managed by staff of the Potomac River NWR Complex. Composed of wetlands and woodlands, the refuge is a narrow strip along the shore of the Potomac River and mouth of Neabsco Creek with a railroad right of way bordering the western edge. The refuge provides habitat for Neotropical migrants, waterfowl, ospreys, and historically bald eagles. There is no public access site for the refuge and it remains closed to public use. Refuge staff are working with Prince William County to provide an access site and the refuge has been identified as providing a possible route for the Potomac Heritage Natural Scenic Trail...

Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge - Cape Charles, VA. Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge - Suffolk, VA. The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is located in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. It includes over 111,000-acres of forested wetlands, with Lake Drummond, a 3,100-acre lake, at its heart. The Great Dismal Swamp has long been considered a place of natural beauty, mystery, and legend. The swamp is an integral part of the cultural history of the region and remains a place of refuge for both wildlife and people. The Dismal Swamp Canal, operated by the Army Corps of Engineers makes up the eastern boundary of the refuge. James River National Wildlife Refuge - Prince George, VA. James River National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is one of four refuges that comprise the Eastern Virginia Rivers National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The Refuge encompasses 4,200 acres of forested habitat along the James River, bordered by Powells Creek to the north, and the historic Flowerdew Hundred Plantation to the south. Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge - Lorton, VA. Mason Neck NWR was established in 1969 for the protection of nesting, feeding, and roosting habitat for the Bald eagles. It was the first federal refuge established specifically for the (then endangered) Bald eagle. The refuge is part of the Potomac River NWR Complex. The refuge, situated along the Potomac River on the Mason Neck peninsula, consists of 2277 acres of oak-hickory forest, freshwater marshes, and has 4.4 miles of shoreline. The refuge has the largest fresh water marsh in Northern Virginia, the largest Great Blue heron rookery in the Mid-Atlantic region (over 1400 nests), is a designated RAMSAR site, and hosts over 200 species of birds, 31 species of mammals, and 44 species of reptiles and amphibians...

Nansemond National Wildlife Refuge - Suffolk County, VA. Nansemond National Wildlife Refuge is located on the Nansemond River in Suffolk, Virginia. It is a satellite refuge managed by Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Nansemond National Wildlife Refuge became part of the US Fish and Wildlife Service National Wildlife Refuge System in 1973 when the US Navy transferred 207 acres of salt marsh to the Service. In 1999, an additional 204 acres of upland grassland and forested stream corridors were transferred from the US Navy. It is not open to the public...

Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge - Woodbridge, VA. Occoquan Bay NWR was established in 1998 and is situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Occoquan Rivers. This 644 acre refuge was previously a military research site and is part of the Potomac River NWR Complex. The refuge has a unique mix of wetlands, forest, and native grasslands that provides a diversity of habitats for wide variety of species. Wetland habitats cover about 50% of the refuge and include wet meadows, bottomland hardwoods, open freshwater marsh, and tidally influenced marshes and streams. Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge - Davis, WV. Canaan Valley, at an altitude of 3,200 feet, is 14 miles long and 3 miles wide, and the highest valley of its size east of the Rocky Mountains. Climate and habitats are typical of areas much further north, and the plants and animals are unusual for the latitude. Many Valley species are at or near the southernmost edge of their ranges.
